    BIG TROUT!
    Size 01 x 02

“I created the Thrasher to mimic baitfish in the rivers and lakes around me.
Georgia’s state bird is the brown thrasher so I thought this was a perfect name for a streamer pattern.
The fly has stacked and spun deer hair with laser dub over to create the body of the fly.
Deer hair is more buoyant and laser dub holds water and sinks which in turn makes this fly swim erratically hence the name, “Thrasher”.

You can fish it over structure since it has a hover action and it can also sink into deeper pools.

It’s a universal fly for any water type.”

Male size 20 and Female size 20

Trico Spinner falls can be magical but having the wrong imitation can ruin a day. Females are often olive in the abdomen and dark brown in the thorax. Both fall spent to the water, and trout might key on one, the other, or both. So make sure to have these female poly spinners in your box.

    Umpqua Fly Twisted Crane Smitherman
    SKU: NFD9889

“A little simpler addition to the Twisted Series with just the twisted abdomen and a CDC collar.

The natural color variation is made with white spanflex. Since spanflex has a little transparency to it, taking a sharpie to the thread on the bottom part of the fly shows through the abdomen and creates a pretty unique look to this fly.

I started with only the natural version, but couldn’t leave out a tan variation of it. It’s simple, but so effective.”

  • Umpqua Fly Twisted Worm Josh Smitherman 16/3.0

Umpqua Fly Twisted Worm Josh Smitherman 16/3.0
    SKU: NFD9639

“The Twisted Worm is a pattern that I created several years ago and stuffed into a box. I ended up forgetting about this pattern for well over a year before rediscovering it.

After finally fishing the prototype pattern and having some great success, I went back to the vise to make a few final tweaks.

I created this fly to be a Euro style worm pattern.

It’s smaller than the average worm imitation that is seen so much and it drops quickly in the water. It’s also a lot more durable than most patterns available being that it’s made of spanflex.

The UV resin on the bottom serves two purposes; it fills the slot in the tungsten bead so that it drops quicker and it also covers the main contact point so that the bead won’t lose its color after bouncing along the rocks.”

Size 16 with 3mm tungsten head.

Umpqua Fly Waking Mouse 2.0 2
    SKU: NFD9895

While it had never been my experience that the original Waking Mouse was prone to deep hooking fish, stories from guides in Kamchatka said the fish liked it so much that they were at times taking the fly deep and sadly bleeding out. As a result, some of the guides there were turning to Jeff Hickman’s Mr. Hanky (which is another great Umpqua pattern). At the same time, Kamchatka guides were asking for an even larger pattern so I hit the vice and made the 2.0.

This is a large profile, easy to cast fly with an upturned trailing hook designed to reduce mortality. Fish this with a high rod tip and steady subtle pulse/chug. This is also a great night fishing pattern in both still waters and rivers. Also note that because it has such a large profile it can twist and fly in an unruly fashion. I often trim the deer hair down on the front half making the profile more egg shaped (skinny head and fat ass) to make it less unruly.

    Umpqua Fly X Caddis Mathews
    SKU: NFD9853

    Size: 14 and 16
    Colours: Olive and Tan

“We came up with the X Caddis thirty-five plus fishing seasons ago. Like many of our fly patterns, this one was created to fool the larger resident rainbow trout of the Henry’s Fork.

It was my wife Jackie’s idea to tie a trailing-shimmering, sparkling shuck on a caddis imitation. Her reasoning was simple, if super-selective trout took Sparkle Duns with their trailing shuck for emerging and crippled mayflies why wouldn’t the same thing work with caddis imitations too?

We know that caddis, like mayflies, can experience difficulties emerging from their pupal shucks at times. Many end up trapped in their shucks entirely or with the shucks trailing off their body and wings fully emerged.

Fish may not always key in on cripples or impaired adults, but we’ve found this fly works well, in fact much better than standard ties like the Elk Hair Caddis. We fish it as a dry fly, upstream, dead-drifting is the most productive method, casting to individual fish that are rising.

The fly also works well when pulled under the surface in front of rising trout and allowed to pop to the surface.”
