“A couple of years ago, fishing a pale morning dun emergence on a favorite stretch of northern California’s Hat Creek, I was shocked to experience the hyper-selective rainbows refusing my Missing Link. Not just once, but day after day!

This led to time on the stream observing the behavior of the natural emergers the fish were taking, as well as collecting some samples of those same emergers in a small net to look at more closely. Initially I was stumped, not seeing much that would explain the fish’s reticence to take my old favorite.

But slowly, after scrutinizing a larger number of takes, a slight pattern difference emerged.

It seemed that the fish had enough naturals to choose from that many were keying in on emergers still attached to their shucks, insects that were truly helpless for several seconds as they drifted on the surface.

Collecting a few in this stage, I noticed the segmentation of the emerging bodies was quite pronounced, and it was easy to imagine that the clinging shuck would wiggle a bit as the insect struggled to free itself.

Not needing to reinvent the wheel, I simply added a two-part soft shuck to my Missing Link, and substituted a quill body in place of the original’s thread and Flashabou abdomen.

Those Hat Creek fish never knew what hit ’em! To be fair, I still use the original Missing Link a lot…but when I have a tailwater or spring creek situation where I know I’ll need my A-game, the Stealth Link comes out first.”

“An idea hit me one night at 2 am while lying in bed, what if I used a jig bomb and found a way to make it round?

I immediately got up, went to my tying bench, and the Sunny Side Up was born.

The Sunny Side Up was specifically developed to act as an anchor fly on a euro rig, but it performs equally well as a lead fly on a traditional indicator rig, omitting the need for split shot.

I use a technique I call “posting the bead” to secure a jig bomb to the top of the hook shank, kind of like a parachute post. Doing this ensures the fly will always ride hook point up without impeding the hook gap and provide the weight necessary to sink your rig.

The Sunny Side Up is available in 3 different sizes which will offer 3 different sink rates allowing anglers to use it effectively in any water type, be it a small stream, big river, or stillwater. If trout live there, they will eat it.”

“It was late October and Barry and I were hosting a group of anglers for Frontiers Travel at Boca Palia on Mexico’s Yucatan coast.

Prior to our arrival Mitch, a category five hurricane, was south of us but not expected to hit the Yucatan. Still it hovered in the back of my mind. Our first day out on the water we were hit with bad news — the storm overnight had changed direction and we were now directly in its path.

Fast forward a few hours to the now boarded up Holiday Day Inn Express in Cancan. The owner left, headed inland to Meredith. Before leaving he left us with four cases of water and a box full of candles. His last words were, “Good Luck, hope to see you in a couple days.”

Three days of torrential rain followed but luckily no severe hurricane damage to Cancun. We stayed inside and tied flies.

We knew that we would probably go back to Boca after the storm passed as our original plan was to spend three weeks at the lodge.

Thinking that we would find dirty water from the storm, I decided to create a crab-like fly that would give off vibrations that might attract a fish. I wanted the fly to be on the bulky side and it had to look alive.

When I finished I asked Barry to take a look. The tan Marabou tail had a hint of crystal flash, the bulky body was a series of grizzly dyed tan hen body feathers tightly packed up to the lead eyes.

Three silicone sili-legs protruded out from the sides of the fly and finally a tan dubbing brush was figured-eighted around the eyes.

Barry replied that it looked like a souped up wooly bugger on steroids. I liked that so I named it Super Bugger and so the fly was born in a boarded up hotel room during the second most deadly hurricane in history (or it was at that time).

So although the first Super Bugger was of salt water design, after returning home I quickly turned to a freshwater application and extended the colors to black and olive.

Fished right it is my go to fly whenever I think of fishing streamers. To date in the salt I have indeed caught permit, bonefish, redfish and even a snook on the super bugger.

On the freshwater side a 16 and a half pound rainbow from Argentina’s Jurassic Lake is my best. They say you have to have faith in your fly and I have a mountain of faith in the Super Bugger!”

“I developed the SweetMeat Caddis to be a durable pattern that sinks fast, has enough color pop and great movement from the CDC.

Originally this fly was designed to be fished around caddis hatches, but it has grown into a fantastic “attractor” point fly to fish throughout the summer months as well.

The turning point for this fly was when, after playing with many variations, I tied some up with two rarely used wire colors. The pattern and construction was already very effective and these two colors were a bit different and had a great caddis feel to them.

I still remember the first day I fished the “Lime” color variant and knew that this combination of colors and materials had just come together into something special – the tastiest of trout snacks. Thus the name, SweetMeat being an archaic term for “an item of confectionery or sweet food”.”

“The SweetMeat Sally is an off-shoot of my SweetMeat Caddis with a CDC “wing” that gives the fly great life and movement in the water and along with the jigged hook ensures the fly fishes hook point up.

Love them or hate them, Yellow Sallies are an incredible hatch on many rivers, so do not be caught without some in your box.

This fly is also a great attractor nymph, so do not be afraid to tie one on, Yellow Sallies hatching or not…”

Born in the land down under, but fished around the globe, this little bug has a way of unsticking the toughest of trout.

People often wonder, how dangerous is the Tasmanian Devil? They are considered to be dangerous when provoked – just like this fly.

Equipped with an oversized tungsten bead, soft hackle collar, and a great color combo that lures the prey into the strike zone. These flies make it fun to plug these little devils into likely water and stir things up.
