Umpqua Fly Atomic Stone Hudspeth Brown/Black
SKU: NFD9878
Size 6
“The Atomic Stone Nymph is the product of a Salmon Fly nymph needed for the big tail waters of the West Cost, specifically here on the Deschutes River. I first started developing this pattern back in the 90’s. At that time the most common stone nymph available was the Kauffman’s Stone. While this pattern fit the bill for shape and size it has one major drawback, it’s almost impossible to sink it in swift, deep runs. The Atomic Stone was designed to sink, and sink fast. Starting with the heavy tungsten bead followed by a lead wrap, and then the placement of the lead along the sides. The lead sides do two things for the fly, first they give the fly extra weight needed to sink, and secondly, they create the basic shape of the stone nymph without having to create too much bulk with dubbing. By keeping the dubbing thin the fly will not trap air, thus adding to its sink rate even more. Over the years I have refined the fly, adding the feather stem antenna, the addition of rubber legs, and the last addition, (one of the best in my opinion), is the addition of gills. Large mature Salmon Fly nymphs have very prominent white gills under their thorax. Most patterns today omit this attribute. I think the white gills create a trigger for trout as it creates just enough flash without over doing it, as well as matching the natural insect drifting through the current.
Over the years this pattern has been responsible for many great days on the water, most of the time being the sole pattern responsible for hook ups. The pattern is very durable, and can easily take the abuse that even post spawn Redsides can dish out. Once spring hits there’s no debate on what fly pattern goes on point for the basic nymph rig.”

Umpqua Fly B/C Dropper Hopper Tan
SKU: NFD9862
Size 10
“I have to admit that I was pretty flattered back in 1998 when John Barr asked me to help him work on a new pattern he had been having trouble with.
This was early on the Hopper Copper Dropper days and John was trying to develop an ultra-buoyant and visible indicator fly. He had some pretty rough prototypes that had a wrapped yarn body that just wasn’t cutting it. He asked if I could play around with it a bit and see if I could incorporate foam body like I had used on my Charlie Boy Hopper.
I went home and confidently went to work on the fly…for about fifty hours.
What seemed like would be an easy add-on became a complete redesign of the fly, incorporating the foam body, a robust bullet head, elk hair and flash wing, knotted legs and an indicator on top.
I fought with one aspect or another of this damn thing for what seemed like forever until it came to me one night lying in bed. The next day I got up and twisted up the final version in a fury.
John and I then proceeded to test the fly all over the state and found that it really did exactly what we wanted it to do.
As a funny aside, I had tied one of the early versions with a polypro macramé yarn wing, way back before the Chubby et al, but we both decided that it was just a little too dirty to put our names on…my how times have changed!”

Umpqua Fly Baby Boy Hopper Olive
SKU: NFD9863
Size 14
We loved this diminutive Hopper from the very first inspection. But we knew we had a winner when Administrative Manager, Geri Norton, said it “was very cute”. And besides the real fishing situations this fly was designed for, sometimes “cute” works. This smaller Charlie Boy was Charlie’s real answer to fishing – and having loads of fun – early season hoppers, imitating the small, frequently wingless “juveniles”. In addition it became the perfect little hopper for suspending nymphs on very shallow skinny riffles, with a foam dry that was stealthier. The Baby Boy also offers a size for small stream fishing over wild, smaller trout. Oh yeah – have we mentioned panfish yet? Plus, do not forget – “it’s cute”.

Back Flop Jig
SKU: NFD9710
Euro nymphing has rapidly become a mainstream angling method over the last few years.
Those of us who have practiced it for a long time certainly are not surprised given its effectiveness in a variety of rivers and water types.
A sub-discipline within Euro nymphing that still has yet to be practiced by a wider group of anglers is fishing streamers on Euro nymphing leaders. Maybe that’s because “Euro streamering” doesn’t quite have the same roll off the tongue?
Regardless, fishing streamers on Euro nymphing leaders is a technique that my Fly Fishing Team USA mates and I have been practicing for over a decade now.
In certain situations, it has produced some of the most ridiculous catch rates that I have seen when standard nymphing approaches have been slow.
The Backflop Jig is one of my go to streamers for this technique. The squirrel fur produces lifelike movement but it is heavy and streamlined enough to sink quickly to invade a trout’s space and produce a response.
You can jig it vertically, pulse it horizontally with the rod tip, or strip it. Try multiple presentations with the Backflop Jig and you will likely find at least one that brings a lot of trout to the net.

Umpqua Fly Balanced Leather Leech Matt Winkler 10
SKU: NFD9642
“The Balanced Leather Leech is tied on a traditional balanced fly foundation, a jig hook with an extended tungsten bead on a pin; designed to hang horizontal under an indicator.
What sets the B.L.L. apart from other balanced leeches is the use of ultra-suede as the tail material.
I went to great lengths sourcing the correct ultra-suede in both color and thickness for this pattern.
The ultra-suede does a fantastic job of imitating a real leech with its ultra slim profile, undulating swimming action and natural tapered end.
The fly is finished off with a slim body of simi seal dubbing which provides just the right amount of flash and movement in the water.
The realistic ultra-suede tail, horizontal presentation and flash all combine for an outstanding stillwater fly.”

“To keep up with the growing popularity of stillwater fishing, I have expanded the BLL series with a scaled down, Nano option.

The colorways in the series have expanded to include ~ Black/Red & Olive.”
