Umpqua Fly Waking Mouse 2.0 2
SKU: NFD9895
While it had never been my experience that the original Waking Mouse was prone to deep hooking fish, stories from guides in Kamchatka said the fish liked it so much that they were at times taking the fly deep and sadly bleeding out. As a result, some of the guides there were turning to Jeff Hickman’s Mr. Hanky (which is another great Umpqua pattern). At the same time, Kamchatka guides were asking for an even larger pattern so I hit the vice and made the 2.0.
This is a large profile, easy to cast fly with an upturned trailing hook designed to reduce mortality. Fish this with a high rod tip and steady subtle pulse/chug. This is also a great night fishing pattern in both still waters and rivers. Also note that because it has such a large profile it can twist and fly in an unruly fashion. I often trim the deer hair down on the front half making the profile more egg shaped (skinny head and fat ass) to make it less unruly.

Umpqua Fly X Caddis Mathews
SKU: NFD9853
Size: 14 and 16
Colours: Olive and Tan
“We came up with the X Caddis thirty-five plus fishing seasons ago. Like many of our fly patterns, this one was created to fool the larger resident rainbow trout of the Henry’s Fork.
It was my wife Jackie’s idea to tie a trailing-shimmering, sparkling shuck on a caddis imitation. Her reasoning was simple, if super-selective trout took Sparkle Duns with their trailing shuck for emerging and crippled mayflies why wouldn’t the same thing work with caddis imitations too?
We know that caddis, like mayflies, can experience difficulties emerging from their pupal shucks at times. Many end up trapped in their shucks entirely or with the shucks trailing off their body and wings fully emerged.
Fish may not always key in on cripples or impaired adults, but we’ve found this fly works well, in fact much better than standard ties like the Elk Hair Caddis. We fish it as a dry fly, upstream, dead-drifting is the most productive method, casting to individual fish that are rising.
The fly also works well when pulled under the surface in front of rising trout and allowed to pop to the surface.”

Umpua Fly Cathys Fleeing Crab
SKU: NFD9772
This crab is not completely new, that is obvious, being similar to the Rag Head style in thread color and body style. But Barry and Cathy have spent hours and hours casting to bones and permit in choice flats throughout the tropics.
So this version has had some changes made: longer Silli Legs tipped with bright orange (that will get some attention) and lots of marabou in two contrasting colors for extra motion.
This fly has been a success wherever it’s been fished. Subtle changes, great results. It has been proven effective for several years from Mexico to the Bahamas to Los Roques.

Umpua Fly Chewy’s Cyclops Chouinard Bonefish
SKU: NFD9773
“Chewy’s Cyclops is the pattern that started it all.
It was designed for Bahamas bonefish as a replacement for the Gotcha. As we all know, bonefish love the Gotcha, but the bulbus whistling beadchain eyes have always been the weak link.
The Cyclops lands with a fraction of the plop of a Gotcha, swims perfectly and now in sizes from #8 with a tiny 3mm bead on up to a #2 with a 4mm bead, can set up any bonefisherman with flies for all tides and situations.”

Umpua Fly Improved Merkin
SKU: NFD9775
In the early 1980’s permit were targeted with crab flies using round foam or epoxy bodies. By the mid 1980’s the late Del Brown and Captain Steve Huff designed the revolutionary Merkin crab which called for Aunt Lydia’s Sparkle Yarn tied perpendicular on the shank, #1 or 1/0 hooks and large lead barbell eyes. The yarn was trimmed to a trapezoid which reduced casting flutter and greatly improved the sink rate. Sandy Moret soon found that the jumbo bonefish of the Keys were fools for the same pattern by scaling down to #4, and switching the rubber legs from solid white with red tips to creamed colored rubber barred legs. Scores of bonefish over 12 pounds fell for this revision as did well over 100 permit on the larger versions.
As Aunt Lydia’s Sparkle Yarn became difficult to obtain, Sculpting Fiber has proved to be an excellent replacement. The Improved Merkin is a much welcomed addition to our growing inventory of innovative patterns. And who better to be in charge of the quality of these flies than our fly specialist himself? “Dave Student always tied thousands of the finest Merkins I had ever seen for over 20 years!”
