“So I’ve spent a lot of time chasing large bonefish in very shallow water. Super spooky and very picky fish. Standard bonefish flies just don’t do the trick.

These fish have PhD’s in flies and will laugh at you while still feeding a foot from your fly.

Studying the flats we were on I noticed lots of crabs so next step was to try the typical permit crab but the problem with those we found out very quickly is they are like throwing rocks at them. Every cast the fly would hit the water and spook every fish within 20 feet of it.

So I went back to the vise and dug thru materials until I came up with the simple crab. It lands soft, hook up and when wet looks just like a real crab. The material even holds some air bubbles.

The key to it is to fish it slow. Once a fish has spotted it leave it which makes the fish think the crab is hiding. Fish will run right up to it and grab it.”

Skwala hatches are hot these days. Many western shops and guides are filling their earliest river trips of the year for this moderate sized, and previously ignored, stonefly. During occasionally inclement weather around March, these bugs interest the largest trout and cause fishermen to don winter capilene and fleece for the first big feeding binge of the season. Dry flies in the snow! Not many fly designers have the hands for stone nymphs quite like Mike Mercer, so this bug was a no–brainer. – Just the right size (17 — 23 mm) – Just the right color, with the luster of Buggy Nymph blends. – Sili–Legs for motion, motion – Tungsten for the weight. Many fishermen are meeting this hatch on guided trips so Mike gave you a heavier fly, a guide fly.

“I came up with the Slick Chick Stone on an English hook to ride butt down while the foam wing case keeps it more up right in the water, and not spinning around like the hook was intended for.

Fishes extremely well where any stonefly is present!”

“The reason I developed the Slider Bugger was because I wanted a larger Sculpin pattern (by my standards) that was heavy enough to get down, provide an erratic movement in the water and be fairly easy to cast.

I find around 3 inches to be a great sculpin size in many of my favorite Southern Rockies Rivers. I achieve that preferred size by tying a single hook pattern with a slightly longer than the standard “1 hook shank length” tail.

This also adds to the erratic movement, but what truly adds the movement is the combination of oversized lead eyes with a “slider” style deer hair head. Add some slightly oversized hackle and rubber legs and it’s the perfect combo, in my opinion.

The slider bugger is my go-to sculpin pattern when I’m needing something larger than my Cousin It Sculpin Jig pattern. It’s easy to cast, gets down quick, and has great action when dead drift or retrieved.”

Don’t let pride stop you from catching fish. When your classic dry flies aren’t bringing fish to the net, swallow your pride and give the fish what they want…protein that is familiar and easy to swallow.
When the water is high or off-color, worms are often being washed into feeding channels and this can be an extremely effective pattern.
