“Going back more than 10 years ago, I got invited by a good friend and client to Guanaja, Honduras for a weeklong DIY saltwater trip and sat down to tie some permit flies for the trip.
I had talked with a bunch of people that had been down there to fish and researched all kinds of crab photos.
With all the standard stuff I began to play around with a more imitative Reef Crab imitation. Looking for a more mixable alternative to wool, I tried using rabbit instead- which ended up working nicely. By adding in some deer hair, we got a fantastic, mottled effect.
Long story short, ended up with two DIY permit that week on that initial olive version. Over the past few years, we have had this fly do very well everywhere, Bahamas, Belize, Mexico, even made some in roads with a handful of Florida Keys guides.
When Pat Cohen came out with the laser cut claws I played around with a few and thought they looked like a great fit. After fishing with them, I am convinced they work even better.”

Umpqua Fly Deep Cleaner Bond
SKU: NFD9874
“Over the years fishing all of Montana’s glorious rivers and looking over the bugs and extraordinary hatches I really enjoyed tying up different patterns that were simple and effective. About four years back there was the mop fly craze which I had only seen photos of and never tried. I was doing a bathroom remodel of my house and I was walking through a local Ace Hardware and waddled past a brown hand cloth that is the exact color of a coffee rubber legs and snatched up two of them which had so much mop I’d be good for life. I went home that night and created the Deep Cleaner.
Simple, effective and has a fuller more voluptuous body, thick. More so than any of the other stone flies I use on a regular basis. The deep cleaner has a 360° full frame and once you get it deep in the box, the bounce and the hover, just so good. A simple playoff of the pats rubber legs, just add mop, and of course a little touch of black sharpie, but you can get as creative as you want with tiger stripes giraffe markings or simple dots. After there’s been a few other boats that float through the box a simple pass with the deep cleaner BRINGS them out. A number one go to anchor fly all year on any river with a population of stone flies. Or just double up and throw 2 tandem and double your chances!”

Umpqua Fly Deep Cleaner Jigged Bond Coffee/Black
SKU: NFD9907
Size 8
“Several years ago when I lived in Montana, I uses to tie the Deep Cleaner on a jig hook and put them in buckets of water to see how they reacted on the bottom.
I noticed that it had a more natural approach while bouncing on the bottom and from rock to rock, the same way a natural stone would, by lifting its tail while traveling downstream.
The original deep cleaner is a free-floating stone getting caught in the current, and with the heavier jig hook it really moves from rock to rock while the mop material keeps the tail buoyant and slightly lifted. During a big stonefly hatch before the dries would really pop, I would often double up with the deep cleaner when nymphing. While guiding on the Big Hole River, I would use this tactic often during the Salmonfly hatch, having the heavier jig on the bottom and the original Deep Cleaner a little higher up in the current. It would always lead to a very productive day running the Double Deep Cleaner!”

Umpqua Fly Detroit Mop City Eakins Cream Medium
SKU: NFD9708
“Here is a mop pattern with some personality!
There is a lot happening here with a tapered and curved tail, a breathing thorax, and feathers and dubbing for the collar and wing; and they all seal the deal here.
I had a request for a mop fly, and although there are several offerings in the mop fly department, I felt there was space for something else. I wasn’t approaching this as anything other than a big, plump, irresistible aquatic grub/crane fly larva.
This comes in small and medium lead eyes allowing some versatility from still water to the river. Although the small lead eyes may seem a little heavy for some still water applications, don’t be fooled.
A gentle pendulum cast with a drag and drop finish will yield results!
Another quick river tip is to use the DMC as your point fly, and a fly of your choice as your dropper, and tight line the run. I will nymph deep runs with this rig when fish are holding deep and visibility is poor, referring back to euro-nymphing techniques.”

Umpqua Fly Dirty Happy & Double Dirty Hippy
SKU: 9899
Size 4 (single)
Size 2 (double)
“Been tying variations on this one since a trip to the Missouri a few years back…needed a streamer that was a more realistic impression of a small fish, rather than a bugger type silhouette. Tried to create a fly that would have a sparser silhouette without a lot of casting bulk. Marabou and fox fur create a skeleton type body, spread wide over the non traditionally placed cone which adds a bit of weight but is more to keep the materials flared around the hook for shape and volume. Fox fur head matches the real thing and has realistic eyes firmly attached. Flash is tied from the inside to flash through more subtly. Tied in rainbow and brown trout versions to mimic these common food sources.” – Charlie Craven
Double Dirty Hippy:
Articulated, larger and swimmier version of the original Hippy. Meant to be fished slowly to let the marabou breathe. Fish it through pockets and deep slots and jig it along. Hidden cone spreader and ample lead wraps to stay down. Double size 4 hooks.
