Story goes, the idea of the Kreelex Minnow came to Chuck one night in a dream. When he woke up he rushed directly to his vise to begin to tie the pattern before he forgot what he dreamt about. Back then Chuck claimed he slept in the nude, thus the very first Kreelex Minnow was tied whilst buck naked.

This all happened prior to a guided trip down to Chile. Chuck brought the newly developed pattern down there with him and quickly destroyed the few flies he had due to the trout’s voracious takes on the new, highly attractive fly. With no materials available they found the next best thing, potato chip bags. They cut up the foil bags into thin strips to try to immolate the material used for the Kreelex but found no success in replicating the pattern. The next trip down south Chuck made sure he had plenty of the fly to get him through the stay.

Before the Kreelex got its name, Chuck was calling it the Rolex Minnow due to the fly’s flashy shine much like a Rolex watch. On a trip a client told Chuck that Rolex would be quick to sue over the choice of name so “Kreelex” was born after the original material used, Kreinik Flash.

The Kreelex Minnow is a deadly pattern from trout to bass, redfish and more. Tied on a 3 or 4x long streamer hook with Dazl-eyes and two colors of kreinik flash this streamer will be a great addition to any box from the swamps to the streams.

“This pattern came about many years ago when I saw a Dolly Lama fly, but I wasn’t sure how to tie it.

This is what I came up with and it works extremely well. It has great movement and a great profile and is easier to cast than a Dolly Llama.

It should produce just as well in warm water environments as it does in cold water streams and lakes.”

“My Mayhem Mole Crab pattern has two monofilament keels weighted heavily with tungsten beads. This helps get the fly down to the sand quickly. The added weight also aids in creating a disturbance in the sand when the fly is stripped.

This puff of sand is crucial when imitating the crab’s defense mechanism of burying itself in the sand.

The females of the species are larger in size, approximately the size of your thumb, and have a bright orange egg sac that is located on the underside of their rounded gray body.

For predators, like birds and fish within eyeshot, this pronounced pop of orange is a dead giveaway to their location.

For this pattern, I used a small tuft of bonefish pink Finnish raccoon to represent the egg sac.

I like to use natural materials like fur whenever possible because they bring not only vivid color as well as some movement to the fly.”
