    PIKE & PERCH!

The deceiver is a legacy fly pattern that is arguably the most well-known saltwater fly pattern ever designed, and for good reason.

The simplistic design of the fly comes together to form a perfect baitfish silhouette that will fool any fish that preys upon smaller fish.

The Big Fish version is scaled up to handle the largest of predatory fish anywhere you may end up.

The epoxy or “poxy-back” style was originated and popularized by Mike Mercer one of the all-time greatest tiers on the planet. Like all Mercer patterns, not only is this fly extremely effective when golden and pteronarcys stone nymphs are present, the pattern has a realistic elegance that attracts both fish and anglers. Available in standard and jigged versions.

“I’ve fished the classic prince nymph style fly over the years with a good amount of success. But I found myself fishing a river system where fish had become a l little wearier of the classic pattern.

So I started experimenting with an oversized jigged version of this fly that contained a few differences.
I’ve added a hot spot for fish attraction, rubber legs, and CDC for even more movement on the fly.
This fly is a prince nymph, stonefly, green drake all rolled into one, with a side of bizarre.

When a river system has been hammered with jimmy legs and larger stoneflies, the Bizzaro Jerry still has a knack for getting fish to eat.”

“After several trips to South Andros, I had begun to get some idea of what was most attractive to these fish, and perhaps more importantly, the guides. Larger patterns, ranging from a smallish #4 to a 3+ inch #2 seemed to draw the best responses, with the bigger flies being picked out from greater distance, a trait my casting accuracy is commensurate with. Larger patterns also seemed to be preferred by the larger fish. A bright spot of orange or pink was a commonality of many of the favored patterns, as were rubber legs in one form or another. Combining these parts in a single pattern to create lots of movement and replicate an actual food form became my project for the year between trips. To that end, I started playing with variations on the Bahamian bonefish favorite, the Gotcha, until I had strayed so far adrift that I had an entirely new pattern. I was always under the impression that bonefish prey moved slowly and that your fly ought to move in short darts, providing the fish ample opportunity to close in and catch it. This visual display of a shrimp moving relatively long distances and the bonefish’s easy adjustment and even aggressiveness over this behavior changed the way I fish for these fun filled lightning bolts with fins.” – Charlie Craven

  • Umpqua Fly Callibaetis Spinner AK

    Umpqua Fly Callibaetis Spinner AK
    SKU: NFD9854

John Gierach and I were fishing the Henry’s Fork one day in the early 1980’s and enjoying a wonderful Callibaetis hatch of duns. The fish suddenly went off the duns but were still rising. I netted the water and discovered there were many more spinners on the water than duns. I had only two spinners with me so I give one to John and kept the other. Those two flies were the answer to an otherwise boring day. We quickly lost count of the fish we caught on the spinners. Now I carry at least a dozen of them in size 14. The wings should be one size larger than you would think and the body should be very thin stripped and dyed pale dun quill. Two turns of grizzly hackle are about right. Remember to clip all the hackle from the bottom of the collar to put the fly right in the surface film.
