There is a lot happening here with a tapered and curved tail, a breathing thorax, and feathers and dubbing for the collar and wing; and they all seal the deal here.
I had a request for a mop fly, and although there are several offerings in the mop fly department, I felt there was space for something else. I wasn’t approaching this as anything other than a big, plump, irresistible aquatic grub/crane fly larva.
This comes in small and medium lead eyes allowing some versatility from still water to the river. Although the small lead eyes may seem a little heavy for some still water applications, don’t be fooled.
A gentle pendulum cast with a drag and drop finish will yield results!
Another quick river tip is to use the DMC as your point fly, and a fly of your choice as your dropper, and tight line the run. I will nymph deep runs with this rig when fish are holding deep and visibility is poor, referring back to euro-nymphing techniques.”

“Been tying variations on this one since a trip to the Missouri a few years back…needed a streamer that was a more realistic impression of a small fish, rather than a bugger type silhouette. Tried to create a fly that would have a sparser silhouette without a lot of casting bulk. Marabou and fox fur create a skeleton type body, spread wide over the non traditionally placed cone which adds a bit of weight but is more to keep the materials flared around the hook for shape and volume. Fox fur head matches the real thing and has realistic eyes firmly attached. Flash is tied from the inside to flash through more subtly. Tied in rainbow and brown trout versions to mimic these common food sources.” – Charlie Craven

The Dolly Llama came about approximately 10 years ago with the onslaught of the string leech revolution. It is a blend of two patterns which at the time were very popular in both Alaska and the lower 48. The “Double Bunny” craze was in full swing and the Cone head string leech was gaining popularity. I began messing around with combining these two patterns, but upsizing the cones to potentially eliminate having to you use split shot or a head. This was important for fishing ice out, particularly standing on ice shelves, sometimes 5–10 feet above the river level. The pattern is by far and away the number one selling fly in Alaska, over taking the Egg sucking leech. Over time, it has now been copied by numerous other fly companies, all of which have added slight variation to the fly, mostly incorrect. If the articulation is not tied correctly the unfortunate “cutting” will cause the loss of the back end of the fly. The hook size is also an important topic, the hook itself has been downsized to eliminate fish mortality. The secret of the fly is the weight of the cone proportioned to the length. In lay–mans terms, if you can get it in the water, it will fish itself. So even The Mayor could catch fish. In the long run, the Dolly Llama will produce with any species of predatory bite and strike fish. From steelhead, rainbows, browns, Bass, all species of salmon, it is the retailers most asked about and recommended pattern. The name came from a stage time in my life where I was reading a lot of Eastern religion and probably smoking too much dope because the lines I was repping only required about 45 minutes of work each week.

To give this fly an underwater sound signature, Charlie stayed away from a deer hair head. Such flies push water, but also cause it to be too buoyant. Using the soft craft fur or Polar Fibre for the head of this fly turned out to be just the solution. By placing the butt ends of these fibers into a dubbing loop, Charlie could create a thick, flowing chenille that could easily be shaped with scissors, wrapped in and around the lead eyes and would sink like a rock, yet shed water on the back cast.

Umpqua Fly Drowned Spinner Trico

When many fly fishermen think of mayfly spinners they envision a run full of rising fish feeding on the lifeless floating spinners as they float downriver. For many of us fishing for rising fish is our favorite technique but fishing spinner falls can be very challenging, especially the predictable and months long Trico spinner fall. The traditional approach has always been to fish a spinner pattern flush in the surface film. This can be effective but also is very challenging. If the lighting isn’t perfect seeing your fly is difficult. If you can’t see your fly you cannot see a fish take it, you are not sure if the cast is accurate and you cannot see if little micro currents are creating drag. The natural spinners are motionless and any drag on your fly guarantees a fish will not take it.
I eliminated all three of the inherent problems when fishing a floating spinner with a technique I developed on the Missouri River when fishing a Trico spinner fall. I used a drowned spinner pattern on about 8 inches of 6x fluorocarbon tied to the hook bend of a black bodied Vis A Dun. With the highly visible dry fly, I could monitor the cast for accuracy and drag and it served as an indicator when a fish took the drowned spinner and some fish took the dry fly. The technique proved to be extremely effective for any spinner fall including rusty spinners and I have successfully used the technique on rivers throughout the West. If spinners falls have been occurring but not while you are fishing, a drowned spinners is a good choice when setting up a nymph or hopper-copper-dropper rig. The spinners are a familiar forage for the trout and they won’t hesitate to eat one subsurface. Baetis mayflies do not have a true spinner fall because the female accompanied by the male crawl under the water to lay their eggs, then they die and are carried downriver. . No doubt trout eat countless drowned Baetis spinners and a drowned rusty spinner is an excellent choice when Baetis have been hatching.
