Umpua Fly Cathys Fleeing Crab
SKU: NFD9772
This crab is not completely new, that is obvious, being similar to the Rag Head style in thread color and body style. But Barry and Cathy have spent hours and hours casting to bones and permit in choice flats throughout the tropics.
So this version has had some changes made: longer Silli Legs tipped with bright orange (that will get some attention) and lots of marabou in two contrasting colors for extra motion.
This fly has been a success wherever it’s been fished. Subtle changes, great results. It has been proven effective for several years from Mexico to the Bahamas to Los Roques.

Umpua Fly Chewy’s Cyclops Chouinard Bonefish
SKU: NFD9773
“Chewy’s Cyclops is the pattern that started it all.
It was designed for Bahamas bonefish as a replacement for the Gotcha. As we all know, bonefish love the Gotcha, but the bulbus whistling beadchain eyes have always been the weak link.
The Cyclops lands with a fraction of the plop of a Gotcha, swims perfectly and now in sizes from #8 with a tiny 3mm bead on up to a #2 with a 4mm bead, can set up any bonefisherman with flies for all tides and situations.”

Umpua Fly Improved Merkin
SKU: NFD9775
In the early 1980’s permit were targeted with crab flies using round foam or epoxy bodies. By the mid 1980’s the late Del Brown and Captain Steve Huff designed the revolutionary Merkin crab which called for Aunt Lydia’s Sparkle Yarn tied perpendicular on the shank, #1 or 1/0 hooks and large lead barbell eyes. The yarn was trimmed to a trapezoid which reduced casting flutter and greatly improved the sink rate. Sandy Moret soon found that the jumbo bonefish of the Keys were fools for the same pattern by scaling down to #4, and switching the rubber legs from solid white with red tips to creamed colored rubber barred legs. Scores of bonefish over 12 pounds fell for this revision as did well over 100 permit on the larger versions.
As Aunt Lydia’s Sparkle Yarn became difficult to obtain, Sculpting Fiber has proved to be an excellent replacement. The Improved Merkin is a much welcomed addition to our growing inventory of innovative patterns. And who better to be in charge of the quality of these flies than our fly specialist himself? “Dave Student always tied thousands of the finest Merkins I had ever seen for over 20 years!”

Umpua Fly Lexo’s Pop Up Crab
SKU: NFD9776
“Of the myriad crab patterns that I have designed and that have been fished successfully, the “POP-UP CRAB” is arguably my best creation to-date. Done in the Del Brown Merkin Crab style and using H2O Fishient Sculpting Fibers as the body components, which in this designer’s opinion are by far the best materials for tying this style of crab and are also available in a superior color array. The three colors offered very effectively cover the complete global flats bottom color spectrum over which this pattern is to be fished and which also mimic the naturals subtle color variations (crab sub-species) which inhabit these specific venues.
Target species of the “POP-UP CRAB” are redfish, striped bass, permit and bonefish. The TAN variation should be used in mottled sand environments which often transitions to a marl bottom, the OLIVE variation mimics the Green Reef Crab, the prevalent crab species found to inhabit most grass covered flats such as those in Belizean, Honduran and other Caribbean waters, and finally the BLUE CRAB variation is meant to mimic the Blue Crab, the prevalent species inhabiting the Gulf and Atlantic coasts Also, the silicone legs used on the SAND, TAN and BLUE CRAB variations were personally developed by this designer and are being commercially produced by Living Rubber.
Aside from the spectral color offerings, the truly revolutionary aspect of the “POP-UP CRAB” is the incorporation of a 60 degree (swimming) jig hook to which the lead dumbbell weight is attached on the bottom of the shank bend which effectively lets the pattern balance vertically on this fulcrum and hop up and down from a pronated position when retrieved. This dynamic is impossible to create with the use of a 90 degree jig hook because this more acute angle causes the pattern to “drag” in a horizontal position on retrieve. The beauty of the dynamics of the 60 degree swimming jig hook is that when in the prone position while being retrieved, any subtle bottom contour will cause the fly to hop up to a horizontal position which causes the pattern to assume a defensive posture and appearance further “exciting” the predator instinct of the targeted species. The size #4 is meant to be used in shallow environs which potentially require a “softer” water entry and the size #2 should be used in deeper water in which a quicker sink rate is preferred and stealth is not a critical element.”

Umpua Fly Mantis Shrimp Veverka
SKU: NFD9777
“When designing flies for predator fish I feel it’s best to match the prey they are feeding on. Most important are the size, shape and color. Size can easily be changed or matched by the size of the hook you tie on. Shape or silhouette must be built into a pattern so it resembles the prey you wish to represent. It should be a fly that’s easy to tie with basic materials, lands lightly, sinks fast and most important, catches fish. The bulky body on my Mantis pattern makes it land softly, and the bead chain eyes bring it to the critical zone. – One notable feature on all shrimp are their eyes. Eyes on real shrimp move and make them look like a creature from another planet. I have not figured out how to incorporate this component into a fly pattern so I used the standard burnt mono eyes. – For the carapace I tied in a tuft of tan rabbit fur. This material looks bulky in the water and displays the most enticing movement. Even at rest this material quivers with life. A slight current or a strip on the line will make this material pulse like no other. – Perhaps the most important feature on my Mantis Shrimp pattern are the legs and the way they are tied on. Most bonefish flies that include legs have them tied in all together in one area on the fly. To me this looks like a clump of legs or a dead shrimp. I wanted my pattern to simulate life so each leg had to be separate and act like a natural shrimp with lots of movement. It takes a little extra time to tie a fly in this manner but I feel this is what makes this fly so distinctive and deadly on wary bonefish. Over the years it has become one of the go to patterns used in the Bahamas and a standard in every fly box that travels to this area.” – Signature Tyer Bob Veverka taken from a feature awhile back from Deneki Outdoors

Umpua Fly One Armed Bandit Brown 2
SKU: NFD9778
This designer’s latest crab pattern was created as a realistic fly presented in three color variations that can be fished in any and all flats venues, mud, marl, grass and white sand. Employing cascade crest tools variegated body fur which was a cooperative creation of this fly designer as the main body component, tying a crab is now a quite easy endeavor as compared to the merkin style of material stacking and layering.
As most dedicated flats fisherpersons are aware, most of the small multi-colored crabs found on the flats have one larger fighting or crushing claw; the second claw used primarily for grasping food, is very small and in many instances is virtually imperceptible. Therefore, the designer has used only one claw on the leading edge of the fly which will flutter and cause the fly to descend into the water column on a 45 degree angle. To note, if the angler so desires, the claw and leg tips can be colored with permanent markers which often is desirable under certain conditions.
