    Umpqua Fly Comparadun
    SKU: NFD9835

    Sizes: 16,18 and 20
    Type: BWO and PMD

The Comparadun defines simplicity, but it is a true fish catching machine. It has one of the most beautiful silhouettes in a mayfly imitation of all time. Due to the nature of the tie the fly rides low in the film and the hollow costal deer hair helps to keep the fly afloat. These comparadune’s are best fished for difficult fish in slow currents where a great imitation is a must. We offer this proven pattern in 22’s through 10’s to match BWO’s to Western Green Drakes.

When I first started nymph fishing in the 1970’s my favorite fly was the Brassie. The style I used was simply copper wire wrapped on the shank of a hook and nothing else. The fly sank fast and it caught fish. Nymph patterns evolved greatly in the following years but when I started designing the Copper John I thought back to the Brassie that I used when I first started nymph fishing with an indicator. I thought that a shank wrapped with copper wire might be a good place to start. I then added other materials so it would look more like a fly. After many designs and material changes I ended up with a pattern that I thought might work. It had stonefly nymph style biot tail, a copper wire abdomen, peacock here thorax, partridge legs, a turkey quill wing case with a strip of pearl flashabou pulled over the top which was coated with epoxy and a brass bead. I felt the fly was ready to be field tested. I tied a 3 foot section of 4x tied to the hoo bend of the hopper and attached the prototype nymph(no name at that point) I added 10 inches of 5x of the hook bend of the nymph and attached a dropper that represented an immature stage of the revealing aquatic insect activity at the time. I fished the set up in a number of different rivers with a variety of droppers below the new nymph. I was blown away by how well it worked. The new nymph sank rapidly and carried the smaller unweighted pattern down with it. The new pattern was very visible in the water and no doubt fish readily saw the new nymph and the small dropper nymph that otherwise they might not have noticed. The late Bruce Olsen of Umpqua Feather Merchants gave the fly its name, the Copper John. Over the years there have been material changes and different versions but the basic concept and design has remained unchanged. Wapsi’s Thin Skin replaced the turkey quill for the wing case. Synthetic peacock dubbing replaced the peacock her for the abdomen and hen back fibers replaced the partridge for the legs. I tied the original Copper John with natural copper wire and in the following years Wapsi introduced a variety of colors in their Ultra Wire line and I added more colors, most notably red and other versions including rubber legged models followed

  • Umpqua Fly Cousin It Sculpin Jig Mena

    Cousin It Sculpin Jig Mena
    SKU: NFD9667

“I developed the Cousin It Sculpin to fill a few needs in my fishing style. One, I really enjoy tight line nymphing techniques. The Cousin It Sculpin fits a sweet spot of being compact and heavy enough to get down quick, when needed, but still be manageable on the 10’ 3wts I enjoy fishing while wade fishing.

The second reason was to fish on the dead drift under an indicator while fishing out of a boat. While the Cousin It Sculpin has these attributes, it has since become my go-to smaller/ more realistic sculpin pattern in most fishing situations. The jig hook platform is perfect for sculpin patterns because they help you fish close to the bottom; riding hook point up and helping provide that erratic sculpin action.”

  • Umpqua Fly Crease Fly

    Umpqua Fly Crease Fly

Colours: Silver, Fire Tiger, Olive and Blue Back

After Clouser’s Minnows, the Crease has become our most explosive selling saltwater — and fresh — pattern. It is simply a monster seller, and no competitors have tied any imitations remotely close to the quality of Umpqua. It has been around for quite awhile, languishing in obscurity until Joe met Umpqua…funny how that can sometimes happen that way. It can, it has and it will catch most saltwater species that will eat a fly. It also will fish freshwater for Pike, Bass (large and smallmouth), and for Midnight Browns…leave the feathered flies at home. Neutrally buoyant on fast sinking lines; a popper/slider on top. It alone is gaining a reputation for West Coast stripers rivaling the Gurgler. This pattern has been discovered. These two new colors are the result of discussion between Jim Watson (Umpqua QC Dept) and Joe Blados when they fished together, and subsequently Jim’s trip to our fly factories where they designed these on the spot. These are both money flies, for nothing we have seen sparkles and dazzles in fly bins quite like Crease Flies…you can spot them from the front door.
